Now I Remember

I now remember what I found so disappointing when I first had a Pocket PC years ago. It was the lack of good third party applications for it and the hassle it was to download and install what was out there. Don't get me wrong, the applications that come with Windows Mobile 5.0 are fine and get me 95% of what I need, but I was looking around for some nice productivity applications and games and there really was nothing to write about. I would have thought by now with the larger numbers of devices now that the market would be large enough to support more third party stuff. I guess all of the problems that plagued developing for mobile devices before are still enough a barrier to entry now.

My Treo is great as a phone and it has enough built-in software to be more than useful, but I guess I was looking for a nice cache of free software to play with. Oh well, maybe I will have to look into the Compact Framework again and build a couple of the applications that I am looking for. Mainly, a nice checkbook/expense tracking program and a calorie tracker.

It might be a nice exercise to build a really basic application in terms of the functionality that I want and see what comes of the effort. It may reawaken the entrepreneurial spirit in me again.
